The Family Is the Cornerstone of Society

The following is a letter to the editor submitted to a local newspaper by one of our members.

Dear Editor:

I am a retired “licensed clinical social worker” with close to 50 years in the mental health field. I am also a longtime “recovering liberal.” In both cases, I am greatly concerned with our nation’s divisiveness and violence, and especially with the disintegration of the family, fatherlessness, and the loss of moral and virtuous behavior.

The vast preponderance of evidence for those conditions rests squarely with the “women’s movement.” Women have abandoned the family and waged unholy war to discard men and reduce men to passive add-ons. Yes, I know there are many individual women and families that do not adhere to the “movement” nor approve of it. But the movement’s momentum carries the day, and we now have chaos, confusion and unstable social, cultural and interpersonal conditions.

Under the banner of being “oppressed,” the women’s movement has seduced and coerced women into “sexual freedom” and individual “liberation”; the twin forces that destroy marriage and family. One of the major architects of this tragedy was Betty Friedan, an avowed Marxist and false prophet.

Today, the results and statistics are devastating. 80% of Afro-American families are one-parent households. In 1950, 11% of children would experience divorce; today, that figure is over 50%. In 1956, less than 5% of newborn infants were born out of wedlock; today that figure is 40%. The stats on crime, violence, education, etc. are appalling. The assault on tradition, on family, on men and on our spiritual life is slowly destroying our constitutional republic and, indeed, our Western society.

We must return marriage and family to an exalted, honored and God-directed place in our society. That means a father in every home as its leader, protector, provider, and teacher/disciplinarian. And as the father is the head, the mother is the heart of the family to nurture, love, teach, guide, admonish, create and promote virtue and modesty.

Together, they make the family the foundational cornerstone of our society; separately, there is simply confusion, chaos, and destruction.
