A Muslim-only water park day made national news recently.  The Epic Waters Indoor Park in the City of Grand Prairie, Texas was set to host the day.  The event featured a price with or without food, and the food choices were advertised as halal.  A modest dress code would be enforced, and a prayer tent would be available for the faithful.  After the notoriety brought in a flood of complaints, the organizers backpedaled and said that the event would be open to all people, not just Muslims.  In the end, Texas Governor Greg Abbot got involved.  He called it illegal religious discrimination, running afoul of the law he signed forbidding “Muslim-only no-go zones in Texas.”  Since the water park was city owned and government-funded, Gov. Abbot threatened the city with loss of over $500,000 in state funding if something similar were ever held again.

Christmas at the Dells

Interestingly, my family once stumbled upon a similar event at the Wisconsin Dells.  One of the water parks offered appealing pricing for a hotel stay and water park access on Christmas Day.  My wife, looking for a getaway and quite adept at scouring the website for great deals, thought it would be really unique to spend Christmas at the water park.  We checked in and suited up to head off to the water park.  As a Christian venturing into a swimming environment, I have learned the art of focusing on the walkways and inner tubes and not on the various body parts proudly displayed by the immodest.  Years ago, my wife ordered custom-sewn women’s swimsuits that cover from the neck to the calves for herself and our daughter.

To our surprise, upon entering the water park, we found that nearly all of the women were similarly attired.  The one difference was that the other women all wore head coverings.  Though not advertised as a Muslim day, the park was full of Mohammedans.  I thought it was rather brilliant of them to decide to go on Christmas Day, when Christians should be nowhere in sight.  It was an interesting dynamic.  There were a handful of bikinis, but not much else to cause me to avert my eyes for modesty’s sake.  On the other hand, it seemed injudicious to be staring at women surrounded by their Muslim husbands or fathers.  It had a different level of discomfort sidling into a crowded oversized hot tub, as we seemed to be under suspicious scrutiny.  I felt like complimenting them on their modest dress but again was leery of starting a conversation with a Muslim woman.  I always wear a T-shirt along with my swim trunks, as an extra measure of modesty.  Oddly, with the Muslim focus on modesty for their women, none of the men thought of covering their chests.

Twisted Morality

Modesty and morality get twisted in a non-Christian worldview, even when it stems from a so-called religious code.  In countries under Muslim control, a woman may be beaten or raped for even daring to uncover her hair in public.  To counter such an “indiscretion” with an egregious sinful act is a mockery of morality.  I fear for any woman living in a society where men believe that sex can be used as a punishment.  The demands for female modesty come not from a sense of cultural morality, but from a systematic subjugation of women.  Islam is on the rise worldwide, but certainly a belief system with such values must inevitably self-destruct.

Wisconsin residents may remember a confrontation between a Somali couple and a Cinnabon employee that took place in December 2025 in Ashwaubenon, a suburb of Green Bay.  The cell phone footage from the Somalis began after what precipitated the conflict.  It went viral due to the Cinnabon employee gleefully lashing out at the customers with double middle fingers and the use of the “n” word.  The employee was understandably fired from her job.  A GoFundMe campaign was begun by the Somalis, but a rival campaign was started for the former employee under GiveSendGo, and raised over $100,000.  While the employee, “Crystal,” engaged in some despicable behavior, her reaction and the general public’s support appear to have been fueled by an underlying frustration with the encroachment of Islam in America.  Interestingly, as part of the back and forth, the Somali man chided the employee for not having covered her hair, and the employee in turn mocked the Somali woman’s head covering as some kind of “voodoo scarf.”

Alluring Hair?

I have always found the hair prudery in Muslim standards rather strange.  Of all the things to engender lustful thoughts in the male sex, I would consider hair hardly worth mentioning.  Perhaps it is an eastern cultural quirk.  In the World War II era, women’s legs were considered quite appealing to men.  Pinup girls featured bare legs as much as any other body part.  I remember an old USO-style movie where attractive women were marched up on stage behind a partition that blocked all of their bodies except for their legs.  The GIs in the audience whooped in admiration.  Nowadays, you would be hard-pressed to find a Baptist university with a skirt-length requirement in their dress code anymore, but legs used to be a temptation for many men.  However, hair was never a turn-on in Western culture, and it seems outlandish for outsiders to expect an allowance for their hair fetishes.

Islam on the Rise

An interesting side note in the stories about the water park day – In a few articles in the conservative press, there were many quotes from grateful people that the event had been canceled.  It seemed we had “dodged a bullet” by the Muslims not getting to take over the facility.  However, these stories included the advertisement which claimed this was the “3rd annual” event.  It seems like the calvary was a bit late, and the patting each other on the back may have rung somewhat hollow.

Islam is on the rise worldwide, and looking solely at the trend lines, Muslims are projected to eventually outnumber Christians.  However, history is not a straight line, but is full of cycles and reverses.  We must meet the Muslim advance not with invectives and middle fingers, but with the gospel.  We must also be unapologetic that our country was founded on Christian principles and that the Constitution is incompatible with Sharia law.
